Westerville's heritage dating back to 1809, natural beauty, and careful planning make it a special place to call home. Located in the northeast corner of Ohio's fastest growing region, Westerville is a vital city of more than 40,000 residents, a leader in job creation, and it is located just 10 miles from the airport and the state capital of Columbus.

Westerville’s police, fire, and emergency medical response times all average less than four minutes and community oriented programs include the School Resource Officer Program (in conjunction with the Westerville City Schools), D.A.R.E., Kind Call, Neighborhood Watch, and womens’ self-defense courses, as well as separate citizen police and fire academies. For more information about any of these programs, call (614) 901-6472.

We are also proud of our city services. The central Ohio news media routinely showers praise on Westerville’s snow removal services, the Westerville Electric Division provides electric services to all residents at prices lower than our neighboring suburbs, and the Ohio E.P.A. recognized the Westerville Water Division as having the best water system for similarly-sized communities in all of Ohio. The Westerville Service Department even instituted a non-toxic way to treat mosquitoes.

Recreational opportunities abound in Westerville with 41 different parks or recreation facilities, including a state-of-the-art community recreation center. For more information about the center or any lifelong learning offerings from the Parks & Recreation Department, call (614) 901-6500 or visit the Parks & Recreation portion of this site under the City Departments section.

About the schools:

Serving a culturally and economically diverse 52-square-mile area in northeastern Franklin and southern Delaware counties, the Westerville City School District (WCSD) educates approximately 15,500 students. WCSD is the 12th-largest district in Ohio and enjoys a history of being recognized by the Ohio Department of Education as a high-performing school district. The district operates 15 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, an Early Learning Center and an Academic Enrichment Center. All three district high schools have been identified by Newsweek magazine as being among the best high schools in America. The district regularly earns the “What Parents Want” in education designation from SchoolMatch, which recognizes districts that provide the curriculum and academic rigor parents desire most for their children. The Class of 2019 earned more than $25 million in scholarship offers and, on average, more than 70 percent of Westerville School District graduates pursue a post-secondary education at colleges and universities around the world, or enter the military.

The district offers academic coaches; Advanced Placement courses; a high school International Baccalaureate program whose students achieve a diploma award rate higher than the international average; Able and Talented resource centers; Arts, Math/Science, and World Languages/Culture elementary magnet schools; Peer Mediation training; the EOS alternative program for at-risk students; Service Learning opportunities; active business partnerships; and specialized programs that meet the needs of our nearly 2,000 special needs students, our 3,300 gifted students and our 1,600 English as a Second Language students.

Westerville is also recognized for its tradition of excellence in athletics and other extracurricular opportunities. The district promotes sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie on its athletic fields, the overarching philosophy being that these character-building tools last a lifetime and contribute to the future success of its students.

Westerville Schools is successful because of the ongoing collaboration between students, staff, administrators, parents and the community. When the City of Westerville was named a Global Top 7 Intelligent Community (one of only three U.S. cities named), one of the reasons cited for this honor was our district's Career Pathways program, which was described as an "innovative program that aims to create new post-secondary education options for students while closing workforce gaps."

Westerville City Schools boasts Career Pathways in Business Logistics, Engineering and Health Careers. In the most recent year, enrollment grew by 17% for Business Logistics and 100% for Health. Twenty-seven students earned a clinical laboratory assistant certificate in the program’s first two years.

The district enjoys a statewide reputation as an exemplary school district and continues its path of steady progress toward becoming the benchmark of educational excellence. Children come first in Westerville Schools and the district’s number one priority remains improving student achievement.
